Professor Oliver Muensterer is Professor and Chairman of Paediatric Surgery at the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital of Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. A Canadian-born scholar, Professor Muensterer completed his medical education at the University of Munich in Germany, and the University of Alicante in Spain, followed by postgraduate training in North America. His training pathway included general surgery at Washington Hospital Center in the USA, a residency in paediatrics at Duke University Medical Center in the USA, training in paediatric surgery in Germany, and culminated with a Fellowship in paediatric endosurgery at the University of Alabama in the USA.

Professor Muensterer has held faculty appointments at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Leipzig, University of Alabama, and Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He previously led the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz from 2014 and subsequently leading the pediatric surgery program at the Dr. von Hauner Children's Hospital aLudwig-Maximilians-University Munich.

Aa an academic surgeon, Professor Muensterer has made significant scholarly contributions with over 200 peer-reviewed publications, 3 textbooks, and 40 book chapters. His research focuses on paediatric foregut malformations and diseases, using magnets for treatment of esophageal atresia, telemedicine and new media in paediatric surgery, fetal interventions, and using multiphoton microscopy in the management of paediatric tumors and Hirschsprung disease.​
