Dr. Nicholas Chao attained his medical degree from the United Medical School of Guy’s & St. Thomas’s Hospitals at the University of London in the UK. He completed his postgraduate training at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and United Christian Hospital in Hong Kong, as well as the Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Adelaide in South Australia.

Dr. Chao is Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital after working in United Christian Hospital and the Kowloon-East & Kowloon-Central Clusters of Hospital Authority for 6 years. His clinical interests are paediatric gastrointestinal rehabilitation, constipation, minimal access surgery, thoracic surgery, and fetal surgery. He is currently Service Coordinator for the Cleft Lip & Palate Services at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital

Dr. Chao has been a faculty member for advanced laparoscopic surgical workshops across Southeast Asia. He has co-authored 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and 5 chapters in Operative Pediatric Surgery (Spitz & Coran, 6th & 7th eds.), and membership on editorial boards for Surgical Practice, Asian Journal of Surgery, Hong Kong Journal of Paediatrics, Pediatric Emergency Care and BMC Pediatrics.

Dr. Chao is member in several professional societies, including the Hong Kong Society of Minimal Access Surgery, Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, College of Surgeons of Hong Kong Research Committee and Hong Kong Paediatric Society (Past President, 2018–20). He is also the chairman for major conferences, including the Hong Kong Paediatric Foundation, HA Coordinating Committee in Paediatric Surgery.  Dr. Chao has led HA Commissioned Training Programs in fetal surgery in 2013, multidisciplinary care for cleft lip and palate in 2018 and Joint Annual Scientific Meeting in Paediatrics & Child Health organized by the Hong Kong Paediatric Society, Hong Kong College of Paediatricians, Hong Kong Paediatric Nurses Association and Hong Kong College of Paediatric Nursing from 2018 to 2024.
