Professor Mikael Hartman is a Swedish-born breast surgeon who completed his medical training and obtained his PhD from the Karolinska Institute in 2007. In 2009, he relocated to Singapore, where he is currently Senior Consultant in Breast and Trauma Surgery and Head of Breast Services in the Department of Surgery at the National University Hospital. He also leads several major research initiatives as Head of the Singapore Breast Cancer Cohort, the Breast Cancer Prevention Programme, and the Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention Programme at the National University of Singapore.
With over 15 years of experience in Sweden and Singapore, Professor Hartman has published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles in high-ranking international journals and is principal investigator for over 20 research projects, achieving an h-index of 47. Recognizing that greatest impact in curing breast cancer care extends beyond the hospital by empowering women with knowledge and promoting preventative behaviors, he has dedicated efforts to public health education and prevention. In 2014, he combined his passion for motorcycling with his professional mission by leading “The Long Ride” from Singapore to Sweden alongside fellow breast surgeon, Professor Philip Lau. The campaign raised awareness and funds for breast cancer research in Asia through lectures and surgical demonstrations to both public and medical institutions.
Professor Hartman now leads Breast Screening Tailored for Her (BREATHE), a pioneering risk-based breast cancer screening program within the NUHS Cluster in Singapore. This initiative aims to shift screening paradigms from age-based to risk-stratified approaches using genetic and non-genetic factors. He is also Clinical Lead for FathomX, a venture developing artificial intelligence solutions to improve mammogram interpretation and early detection accuracy.
