Professor Bas Wijnhoven obtained his MD in 1997 and subsequently pursued a PhD, focusing on the molecular and clinical aspects of oesophageal cancer, which he completed with honours in 2001. His surgical training began in 2000 in the Netherlands, where he qualified as a general surgeon in 2006. Between 2006 and 2008, Professor Wijnhoven further honed his expertise as a researcher and surgeon at the Department of Surgery, Flinders Medical Center in Adelaide, Australia, where he underwent specialized training in upper gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery.

Since 2008, Professor Wijnhoven has been a staff surgeon at Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam. He was promoted to Full Professor of Oesophagogastric Diseases in 2021. He is the Chair of the Multidisciplinary Dutch Upper GI Cancer Group and also an active committee member of several international surgical organizations. His research focuses on the studies on outcomes after surgery for gastric and oesophageal cancer, as well as neoadjuvant treatment strategies for oesophageal and gastric cardia cancer, including organ-sparing approaches, conducted in collaboration with various departments at Erasmus MC.

Professor Wijnhoven is Editor for the British Journal of Surgery (BJS) and sits on the editorial boards of multiple surgical journals. With a prolific publication record, he has authored and co-authored over 350 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals.
